Jan 28-29, 2017 Macabebe Pampanga Mission

The mission in Macabebe Pampanga was a pivotal experience. Many “Firsts” are associated with this mission. This was the First time we returned to a site we had been to before. In 2010 Susan B. Damilao hosted the very successful first EyeCare WeCare Foundation mission in northern Luzon. In 2015 Susan, and her husband Ed Damilao became the Philippine Directors of ECWC, overseeing the relocation and restoration of the ECWC Mobile Vision Clinic to Luzon. She has been a part of ECWC family almost from the beginning. Bringing a wealth of experience with her, like the administration and oversight of the growth of th SAUP PROGRAM for example. The mission in Pampanga was the first of many missions under her direction. It was also the first time we had separate missions within the same month, testing the Foundations mobility. It was also the first time we targeted children and students by working with Department of Education. The western district of Macabebe Pampanga identified the marginalized children who needed it most. This mission was hosted by the SAUP PROGRAM; therefore, the student/scholars of the program were part of the volunteers learning/helping to work in the mission field. The short turn around was truly a test of grit and resourcefulness of our volunteers. We found a way to “repair” our tonometer by using a motor from gutted tonometer, even though it was a different brand and size. In two days we were able to see over 700 patients of which over 100 were students and children. We dispensed over 600 glasses and referred 14 patients for surgeries.

Jan 14-15 Las Pinas Mission

Las Pinas was our first mission in 2017. Just like many of our missions, it started with an E-mail from Cecille Libinting Mission of the Feast of Alabang Ministry. We had our first meeting late September 2016 with Cecille Mission’s Dom Dimalanta and the ministry leader, Arun Gogna. It was a productive meeting and we scheduled the mission for Jan 14-15, 2017. We did the site visit in November and decided to have the venue in the multipurpose hall inside the Mary Immaculate Parish compound where the Las Pinas Nature Church is located, an open-air church known for its “nature theme”. Lodging was at Pope John Paul II Hall, the parish visiting priest and guest house, located 10 meters from the venue. A perfect arrangement, to Deliver God’s Ultimate Vision Plan for the poor in God’s house and surrounding grounds.
As planned, the volunteers gathered in Makati, before heading to Las Pinas. Our trip was uneventful and we arrived with plenty of time to spare, giving our volunteers a much needed rest. The Welcome Dinner was sumptuous, the welcome remarks by the host and the planned program were fun and made the team feel welcome and appreciated. The mission started on schedule. We were blessed to have Dr. Vina Ballado as resident doctor the next two days. The host group was very organized in the prescreening, and in no time, we saw over 300 indigent patients. We will use their template of prescreening and organizing in our future missions.
On Sunday we anticipated a larger crowd, so we started very early, attending the early mass. Our host and ministry group entertained the crowd and by midafternoon we had seen over 250 patients. Unexpectedly, two of our instruments stopped working. Luckily, we had another Refractor we could use, but we were out of luck when the our only non-contact Tonometer quit also. We frantically tried to fix it, but discovered the motor burned out. In spite of the equipment failures, we ended up seeing over 350 patients, bringing the two day total up to 668 patients. But we could have seen more
The farewell dinner and program was something our team will not soon forget. We were blessed to have such a wonderful host, The Feast of Alabang Ministry.
THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT MACHINE.
